The gills were a brownish to dark grey color.

It looks like a type of Coprinus, most likely C. atrementarius (Inky Cap) or C. micaeus (Mica Cap). Mica caps have shiny particles on top that wash off in the rain. If you watch these awhile, you will probably see them turn black from the bottom up -- it looks like that cap fragment at the top is already doing that.
