This just showed up in my yard under the crab apple tree it is completely encircling the tree. I believe this may be Peziza succosa but I am not sure. The fungi do not have hairs etc., on the interior in fact the centers are almost shiny.

Dead Man's Fingers

I was finally able to find out the name of the fungi, with the help of a list mate - thank you Deb~! - the cluster of fungi is called Dead Man's Fingers and you can get more information about them here http://www.mushroomexpert.com/xylaria_polymorpha.html

Found this cluster of fungi growing in my front lawn in a pile of dog poop of all things!

Fungi




The gills were a brownish to dark grey color.

I found the fungus broken off and laying on the ground next to the log.

The underside of the fungus, it was very spongy, not woody at all.
As you can see it's bigger than my hand.

Lichens


Several lichens on this log all soft from last nights heavy rains.

Moss on Rock

Moss on a rock with lichens and a couple of fungi (puffball variety). Yes I left this in the woods, in fact I put it back eactly where I found it.
